Agriculture receives N$4.4 million in IT equipment
Livestock value chain boosted
The donation included 95 laptops, 80 computers, 30 network printers, four heavy-duty printers, eight projectors, 20 external hard drives and 20 USBs.
Information Technology (IT) equipment worth more than N$4.4 million was handed over to the agriculture ministry by the European Union. The equipment included 95 laptops, 80 computers, 30 network printers, four heavy-duty printers, eight projectors, 20 external hard drives and 20 USBs.
The donation was procured under the Livestock Support Programme (LSP) in the Northern Communal Areas (NCAs) of Namibia and funded through the 11th European Development Fund.
Acting executive director at the agriculture ministry Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata, said the LSP is funded to the amount of N$284 million.
The hardware will be applied within the livestock identification and traceability system (NAMLITS) in the NCA, as well as by the LSP Project Coordinating Unit.
Boost value chain
Nghituwamata said that the overall objective of the LSP is to promote entrepreneurship and enhance the livelihood of the NCA farming communities in a sustainable way.
“The purpose is to improve the performance of the livestock value chain in the NCA.”
The programme is implemented in the Kunene, Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Kavango West, Kavango East and Zambezi regions.
The programme has helped to improve livestock production systems and boosted resilience to climate change, addressed access to domestic, regional and international markets, among other key results.
She added that the agriculture sector remains central to the lives of the majority of the Namibian population and it indirectly supports over 70% of the country's inhabitants.
“Namibia’s primary livestock production industry continues to make a significant contribution to the economy. However, livestock production in the communal areas is faced with numerous challenges, such as limited market access and animal health disease outbreaks among others.”
The LSP was developed as one of the value chains of the ministry’s Harambee Comprehensively Coordinated and Integrated Agricultural Development Programme programme to address the beef value chain in the NCAs.
