AfCFTA can boost intra-African agri trade – Sinimbo
News in short
The agriculture sector is the cornerstone of many economies, providing employment and contributing significantly to Namibia’s gross domestic product.
Deputy trade minister Verna Sinimbo said this on an online agriculture series by Bank Windhoek, where she discussed the implementation of the African Continental Free-Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement by Namibia and the possible spillover effects thereof.
She said the AfCFTA represents a historic step on the journey towards economic integration and holds tremendous promise for Namibia and the entire continent.
According to Sinimbo, the AfCFTA can boost intra-African agricultural trade, leading to increased economic opportunities and overall growth.
“Agriculture is also critical in ensuring food security, especially given the lessons learnt from the pandemic as well as other geopolitical phenomena and our commitment to food self-sufficiency.”
She added that the agreement can promote the trade of agricultural products, making it easier for countries to access a variety of food items and reduce food shortages.
The AfCFTA therefore allows Namibia to export surplus agricultural goods, which can stimulate economic development and export diversification, she noted.
