Abattoir earmarked for Omuthiya

Empowering local livestock farmers
Oshikoto regional governor Sacky Kathindi says the initiative will ensure that farmers are not only producers but also participants in the full value chain of meat production, processing and trade.

Government plans to construct an abattoir in Omuthiya to empower local farmers.

Oshikoto regional governor Sacky Kathindi made the announcement during his recent state of the region address (Sora).

Kathindi said the project, currently in its preparatory stages, is aimed at boosting the agricultural economy.

“I am pleased to inform you that the government is currently engaged in the preparatory stages of constructing an abattoir within Omuthiya,” Kathindi said.

“This project is not just an investment in infrastructure – it is an investment in our agricultural economy, in the empowerment of local livestock farmers, and in the value chains that will uplift rural households.”

Profitable markets

The governor said, in addition, land has been earmarked for the establishment of a dedicated feedlot, which will support farmers in enhancing the quality of their livestock while enabling them to meet market demands both locally and beyond.

“This initiative reflects our belief in practical economic empowerment, ensuring that farmers are not only producers but also participants in the full value chain of meat production, processing and trade,” Kathindi said.

“It is a clear signal that the days when our raw materials left the region without value addition are drawing to a close. We are building an Oshikoto where local farmers have access to reliable infrastructure, modern facilities and profitable markets.”
