Symbol of African freedom
SYMBOL OF AFRICAN FREEDOM: The African Union (AU) has unveiled a statue of Tanzania’s founding father, the late Julius Kambarage Nyerere, popularly known as 'Mwalimu'.
Spotted at the unveiling on Sunday were South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
They were among the more than 40 African heads of state and government who attended the 37th African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, last weekend.
The AU Commission inaugurated the Julius Nyerere Peace and Security Building at the AU headquarters in October 2016.
Tanzania's president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, said the statue will go a long way in honouring Nyerere’s contribution to the liberation of southern African countries and his promotion of peace and security in Africa.
