1 747 crashes, 279 deaths in seven months
Namibia has recorded 1 747 road traffic crashes, 2 996 injuries and 279 fatalities in just over seven months, prompting the Namibian Police to intensify traffic law enforcement across the country.
The figures, covering 1 January to 9 August, were revealed last week during the launch of the Integrated Road Safety Operation for the second-term school holiday and Heroes’ Day commemoration at the Okapuka road traffic checkpoint.
The acting inspector general of the Namibian Police, General Anne-Marie Nainda, said road safety is a serious concern in Namibia, with many road users continuing to disregard established road safety regulations.
The police operation, which runs from 12 August to 10 September, is aimed at reducing road crashes, preventing injuries and fatalities, and promoting responsible behaviour among road users. Under the theme “Engage, Educate and Enforce”, additional traffic law enforcement officers will be deployed along strategic sections of the B1 and B2 corridors. Their duties will include high-visibility patrols, roadblocks, vehicle inspections, checkpoints and targeted enforcement focused on the main causes of road crashes.
