Gendev tells workers of March salary delay
Gendev Fishing has informed its employees that March salary payments will be delayed. In a memo issued yesterday, the company – owned by the ruling party Swapo – cited “unforeseen constraints currently affecting operations” as the cause of the disruption. The situation mirrors recent developments at Hodago Fishing (Pty) Ltd, where Gendev itself holds a significant stake, and where employee salaries went unpaid between November 2025 and February this year. Gendev is a key asset in the ruling party’s commercial portfolio. Last month, the Namibian Seamen and Allied Workers Union (Nasawu) warned of a deepening crisis in the fishing industry, following the loss of at least 200 jobs, with a further 150 facing possible retrenchment. The union attributed the layoffs to reduced operations and deteriorating employment conditions.
