The Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court yesterday remanded the case involving six men facing various charges, including murder, to 20 April following formal complaints regarding their treatment in custody. The accused, Lukas Mekondjo Nekwiyu, Mateus Mewiliko Abner, Petrus Panduleni Nadhipite Usiku, Nghilifavali Johannes, Petrus Kuume Shikwaya and Fillemon Nakanduungile appeared before the court this morning. Legal proceedings were momentarily sidelined as the group raised grievances concerning their detention conditions. The accused alleged that they have been strictly prohibited from receiving visitors and are being granted inadequate time to consult with their legal representatives, potentially infringing on their right to a fair trial. The presiding magistrate postponed the matter to later this month to deliver a formal judgment regarding these complaints. Furthermore, the court is expected to transition into a bail hearing on the next appearance date. While the group has been in custody since their arrests in November 2025, the specific bail applications for Usiku and Shikwaya are scheduled to be heard on 20 April. The six accused were arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court Prosecutor, Justine Shiweda, who was shot at and doused with an acidic substance on 17 October 2025. Shiweda succumbed to her injuries on 7 February.
