Seraya Mentor makes every move count

Before she stood behind a camera directing stories or appearing in front of the camera as a presenter, Seraya Mentor was telling stories through movement.Known to many as 'Ray', the talented Namibian creative has built a career that spans dance, filmmaking, choreography and television.But long before the lights and cameras, her creative life began in an unexpected place – artistic gymnastics.As a national artistic gymnast, Mentor first discovered dance through floor routines.While others saw a performance, she felt something much deeper.“I loved the feeling of freedom and expression," she told tjil."I realised movement could tell stories in a way words sometimes couldn’t.”That discovery sparked a passion that led her to ballet and eventually into the professional dance world. Today, dance remains the foundation of everything she does.Whether she is choreographing a performance, producing a film or presenting on television, storytelling through movement remains at the centre of her work.“Dance taught me how to communicate emotion without speaking, and that influences the way I approach every creative project,” Mentor explained.Her artistic style reflects her background in ballet, characterised by graceful and fluid movement.Mentor refuses to stand still.She is constantly evolving, experimenting with stronger and more grounded movement.“I cannot create choreography without understanding the narrative first. Once I know the story, the movement follows naturally,” she says.For her, dance is far more than entertainment.“Your body is your instrument, taking care of it, training it and respecting it is part of the craft," she added.Self-expressionPursuing dance professionally in Namibia has not been without challenges. Limited opportunities and inconsistent income remain realities for many performers.While she believes Namibians appreciate dance and performance arts, she says greater financial recognition and industry support are needed to help artists build sustainable careers.Her experience working in both Namibia and South Africa has given her a unique perspective. While South Africa offers a larger and more competitive creative industry, Mentor values Namibia’s supportive and collaborative artistic community.Beyond performance, she is passionate about helping young dancers understand that talent alone is not enough. Professionalism, versatility, business knowledge and strong communication skills are equally important for long-term success.Looking ahead, Mentor said she is excited about her upcoming short film, 'The Fear of Movement', a deeply personal project exploring self-expression, growth and breaking free from the pressure of perfection.
