Namibia tennis sensation Johan Theron (13) has returned for more trophies in Botswana, clinching two so far in the boys’ singles and doubles at Gaborone’s International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) Under-14 Circuit.

Theron had last year impressed by scooping seven trophies across the ITF/CAT events, which boosted his African ranking from 34 to 10th. He is now ranked ninth in Africa, with Egypt’s Mohamed Genidy leading the rankings.

Botswana’s four-day tournament concluded on Tuesday and featured some of the finest tennis prodigies across Africa, including the host nation, Tunisia, Algeria, Cameroon, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

In the boys’ singles, top-seeded Theron first went up against Tanzania’s Ethan Dzidzoruu, clinching a comfortable 6-0, 6-0 victory. He went on to face South Africa’s Mpho Bowers, who gave him a run for his money, but Theron ultimately secured a 6-1, 6-7(2), 10-5 victory to book his place in the semi-finals, where he faced Zimbabwe’s Sithole Unathi and won 6-2, 6-4.

In the final, Theron faced second-seeded Botswana’s Tinashe Phatshwane, edging him out with a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 victory to clinch the overall title.

Doubles title

In the doubles, Theron and Phatshwane teamed up, first taking on Zimbabwe’s Ushe Chigogwana and Dzidzoruu (Tanzania) to win 6-2, 6-0 and book their place in the semi-finals.

They next took on the team of Botswana’s Francesco Derek Brink and Motheo Kgosimore, dominating 6-1, 6-0.

In the final, they faced off against Botswana’s Lebone Tlape and Bowers (South Africa), winning with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the doubles title.

On their Facebook page, the Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) congratulated Theron for his exploits in the series so far. The second competition kicked off yesterday at the same venue and will proceed until Saturday.
