Inaugural gi and no-gi trials set for Windhoek

Forty-two athletes from affiliated clubs across the country will compete in the Jiu-Jitsu Federation Namibia’s (JJFN) inaugural gi and no-gi national trials at Pionierspark Primary School in Windhoek tomorrow.JJFN president Jackeline Sass said the competition will form part of the official selection process for future national teams.The athletes will contest both gi and no-gi divisions under the internationally recognised Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP) Tour ruleset.“This event is a key component of our athletes’ development pathway and will be used as part of the official selection process for our national team as we prepare to compete at future regional and international competitions,” said Sass.Athletes will be assessed on their competitive performances, technical proficiency, discipline, sportsmanship and overall readiness to compete internationally.“As the newly established national governing body for the sport, we view these trials as the beginning of a long-term commitment to developing world-class Namibian athletes through structured competition and quality coaching,” she said.Sass added that the trials will give athletes their first opportunity to compete within an official national selection structure that rewards dedication, technical ability and sportsmanship.International pathwayShe said the event will help build a sustainable foundation for the sport and create opportunities for athletes of different ages and experience levels to develop, compete and represent Namibia internationally.“I would like to thank every athlete, coach, official, volunteer, club and member of our executive committee for believing in this vision and contributing to this historic occasion. Together, we are laying the foundation for the future of our sport,” Sass said.She also invited the public to attend and witness what she described as one of the fastest-growing martial arts in the world.“Spectators can expect an exciting day of technical excellence, tactical competition and displays of discipline and respect,” she said.The official weigh-in will take place today at 14:00 at the Z1 Academy at the Old Power Station in Windhoek’s Southern Industrial Area.Doors will open at 08:30 tomorrow, with spectator admission set at N$50 per person.
