GIPF's annual pension bill tops N$4.3bn

The Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF) pays more than 54,000 pensioners and other annuitants a combined N$362 million every month, translating into more than N$4.3 billion annually and making it the country's second-largest payroll.Figures presented during a GIPF post-retirement workshop in the Omaheke Region show the fund had 54,532 annuitants as of June 2026.The beneficiaries comprise 37,369 retired members, 326 disability pensioners, 13,621 spousal annuitants, 3,169 child annuitants and 47 active spousal annuitants.The fund pays out N$362.05 million every month, amounting to N$4.34 billion a year, underscoring its role in providing financial support to thousands of retired public servants and beneficiaries of deceased or disabled members.According to the presentation, GIPF has the second-largest payroll in Namibia, reflecting the significant financial responsibility of administering pensions to a growing number of beneficiaries.The fund's annuitants span a wide age range. The youngest retired member is 30 years old, while the oldest is 102 and has been receiving a pension for 42 years. Among spousal annuitants, the youngest is 29 and the oldest is 106. Child annuitants range in age from five to 24 years.These figures illustrate the long-term nature of the fund's pension obligations, with some beneficiaries expected to receive payments over several decades.GIPF said pensions are paid on the 28th of every month and deposited directly into beneficiaries' registered bank accounts. Pension payments are adjusted whenever increases are approved by the fund. The presentation notes that annual increases have been implemented in recent years, including a 5% adjustment that took effect in April 2026.The fund has urged annuitants to keep their personal and banking details up to date to avoid payment delays and communication challenges. Pensioners are required to report changes to their residential address, telephone number, email address, bank account, marital status and identity details.Annuitants must also comply with proof-of-life requirements. Biometric verification is conducted three times a year - in February, June and October - while pensioners living abroad or those who are bedridden may instead submit a certificate of existence.GIPF identified outdated or inaccurate beneficiary information, delayed proof-of-life submissions and failure to follow prescribed procedures as some of the main causes of payment delays or suspensions.With more than N$4.3 billion flowing to beneficiaries every year, the fund has also cautioned pensioners to remain vigilant against fraud.The scale of GIPF's pension payouts highlights its importance not only to retirees and their dependants but also to the wider Namibian economy, with billions of dollars injected annually into households across the country. - aurelia@nmh-hub.com.na
