A Windhoek man who admitted to killing his wife in their home last year has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court.

Marlo McNab (38) was handed the sentence on Tuesday during proceedings held at the Windhoek Correctional Facility. After killing his wife, McNab attempted to take his life by cutting his throat but survived and spent about two weeks in hospital before being discharged and returning to custody.

Judge Marilize du Plessis detailed the severity of the attack, noting that the deceased suffered 27 stab wounds. These included two fatal wounds to the chest as well as multiple defensive injuries, indicating that she attempted to fight off the attack.

“The court cannot punish in anger, but it must give a sentence that signifies society’s repugnance for murderers and prioritises retribution and deterrence,” the judge said.

She noted that the extent of the injuries demonstrated extreme violence and left no room for leniency, despite McNab’s guilty plea and subsequent suicide attempt.
