Calls for clarity on workers’ future at green schemes
SHORT NEWS
Shadikongoro Green Scheme farm manager, Joseph Mutero, raised concerns about workers’ conditions during Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka’s courtesy visit over the weekend.
Mutero told the governor that some employees have remained in the same positions for about eight years.
According to Mutero, since the dissolution of the Agricultural Business Development Agency (Agribusdev) in 2022, many workers remain on year-to-year contracts, creating uncertainty about job security.
Management of the green schemes, including Shadikongoro, has since fallen under the agriculture ministry. Mutero noted that some employees, as they near retirement, fear leaving without a pension. Mutero added that letters have been sent to the ministry requesting clarity on the workers’ future.
