New regional governors appointed, six booted

Eliot Ipinge
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has announced the appointment of six new regional governors, while retaining Pijoo Nganate as governor of Omaheke.

Immanuel Shikongo has been appointed as the new governor of Omusati, Kadiva Hamutumwa will serve as governor of Ohangwena, and Hofni Ipinge takes over in Oshana. Nathalia Goaoses is the new governor of Erongo, Dorothy Kabula assumes leadership in the Zambezi Region, and David Gertze has been appointed to head the //Kharas Region.

These appointments replace outgoing governors Erginus Endjala in Omusati, Sebastian Ndeitunga in Ohangwena, Elia Irimari in Oshana, Neville Andre in Erongo, Lawrence Sampofu in Zambezi, and Aletta Fredericks in //Kharas.

The newly appointed officials join those announced in March, when several other terms also came to an end. That cohort included Verna Sinimbo for Kavango West, Hamunyera Hambyuka for Kavango East, Sacky Kathindi for Oshikoto, Vipuakuje Muharuka for Kunene, John Julius //Khmuseb for Otjozondjupa, Sam Nujoma for Khomas, and Charles McNab for Hardap.

Those who were replaced earlier this year include Bonifatius Wakudumo in Kavango East, Penda Ya Ndakolo in Oshikoto, Laura McLeod-Katjirua in Khomas, Sirkka Hausiku in Kavango West, Marius Sheya in Kunene, Salomon April in Hardap, and James Uerikua in Otjozondjupa.

Service delivery first

Speaking during the announcement, Nandi-Ndaitwah urged the newly appointed governors to prioritise service delivery and align their work with the implementation of the Swapo Party’s 2024 election manifesto - now integrated into the country’s Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6).

“That document will serve as the reference point for every Namibian. I therefore expect you to familiarise yourselves with the seven priority areas of our government, as well as the eight critical economic enablers, in order to effectively contribute to the development of our country,” she said.
