Man shoots himself in front of police
Residents of Oshakati’s Ekuku location were left reeling yesterday morning when a man jumped out of a taxi and shot himself in full view of police and vendors nearby.
Oshana Region police warrant officer Frieda Shikole said this happened after an attempt by the police to intervene.
Namibian Sun could not establish the man’s name, with both the police and the family remaining tight-lipped.
According to Shikole, the 53-year-old left his house at Oshoopala with a gun after telling his family that he was going to kill himself at the canals behind the Oshakati Open Market.
“His sister was following him and she alerted the police for assistance. The police responded immediately and they found the man on his way to the canals,” she said.
Shikole added that when the man realised he was being following him, he hailed a taxi and got in. The police tailed the cab and asked the driver to pull over.
The man then got out of the taxi and shot himself, she said. He was declared dead on the scene.
Rape
Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 21-year-old woman at Oshifukwa village.
Oshikoto community affairs officer, warrant officer Martha Andreas, said the incident took place on Tuesday and a case of rape has been opened.
Andreas said the suspect and victim each rent a room in the same home.
"The suspect allegedly went to the victim's room, found her awake and requested to have sex, but the victim refused," she said.
The suspect then undressed the victim and proceeded to raped her.
He is expected to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court today. Police investigations continue.
