Dr ‘Fly’ alleges medical neglect in custody

A doctor accused of being involved in the murder of Ondangwa prosecutor Justine Shiweda told a magistrate on Thursday he had been denied prompt medical care while in custody. “I am being told to treat myself simply because I am a doctor. This is unjust,” Dr Fillemon 'Fly' Nakanduungile alleged.Nakanduungile and six of his seven co-accused appeared before magistrate Shantell-Antoinette Wanga-Harris at the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.Nakanduungile told the court he had been ill for three days and collapsed in his holding cell but was not provided with prompt medical care.“It took the officers about 72 hours to take me to a health facility. This situation is entirely unfair,” he said.The doctor is among the primary suspects prosecuted in connection with the 17 October 2025 shooting and acid attack on the late Shiweda. Shiweda succumbed to her injuries in February.His co-accused are Lukas Nekwiyu, Abner Mateus, Petrus Uusiku, Ngilifavali Johannes, Petrus Shikwaya and Mathias Ndengu.An eighth accused, Simeon Tulinane Nangolo, known as 'Osama,' was not present in court for the second consecutive session. Accused make demands State prosecutor Memory Harakuta informed the court that investigations are ongoing, with pending MTC records, cell phone mapping, and forensic results yet to be obtained. She requested a postponement until 10 May 2027.Shikwaya yesterday requested a transfer from Grootfontein holding cells to Windhoek, saying the distance made it difficult for his family to visit him.Mateus expressed frustration over the lengthy pre-trial detention, noting that the case had been pending for more than a year. He requested an earlier hearing date in February 2027.Wanga-Harris ruled that the court does not have jurisdiction over correctional health concerns and advised the accused to submit complaints to the station commander and the head of the correctional facility. Regarding the request for a postponement, she emphasised that the accused cannot dictate the schedule, as it is determined by the status of the investigations.The case was subsequently adjourned until 10 May 2027 for further investigation, and the eight accused will remain in custody.
