EDITORIAL: Whispers in the wind and Namibia’s culture of fear

In Namibia today, the loudest voices are often the ones muffled, strangled by fear. Across boardrooms, ministries, and civil service corridors, people whisper - because speaking truth to power has become a perilous gamble. Namibians, it seems, are terrified of offending those who control the national purse or the levers of influence.Business leaders weigh every word with the precision of a tightrope walker. A single comment might be construed as dissent, a betrayal, or a dare. And the penalty? Being shut out from government contracts, opportunities, or the faintest hope of future collaboration. Officials, too, measure their sentences, crafting responses that are safe. These fears are not figments of imagination; they are real, and they are enforced by leaders who wield power like a cudgel rather than a tool of service.What kind of society do we become when fear dictates discourse? When leaders use their authority to punish those who dare to think independently? The answer is chilling: a society of whispers, a nation of muted ideas, a country where innovation, accountability, and courage are treated as liabilities rather than assets.True leaders do not seek obedience through intimidation. They welcome debate, tolerate critique, and understand that discomfort is often the precursor to progress. This cowardice is contagious. It stifles creativity, suffocates bold policy solutions, and erodes public trust. When the promise of personal advancement is tied to muteness, society pays the price in mediocrity. It is time to call out the bullies who hide behind their power and punish candour. It is time for Namibians to reclaim the courage to speak boldly, to debate fiercely, and to challenge without fear of retribution. The nation’s growth depends not on whispered acquiescence, but on the audacious voices willing to demand accountability and truth.
