EDITORIAL: Swapo to blame for congress mess

If reasons cited by Frans Kapofi for quitting the Swapo vice-president race are genuine, he did a commendable job. The lure of becoming the country’s next president is often too strong to resist, so it must have taken guts for him to arrive at that audacious decision.In truth, his nomination was as controversial as the Helmut Amendments that dashed his State House dream. The inclusion of Kapofi and Tom Alweendo in the race was a non-starter from the word go.And Swapo is to blame for the mess it finds itself in. The amendments are draconian and self-serving.There are Swapo leaders, perhaps Kapofi included, who served the party more resoundingly than a lot of Johnny-come-latelies whose only claim to fame is to have sang songs for 10 consecutive years in the central committee.There are no records of their individual contributions to the party, apart from wearing scarfs and posing for photos to feed their social media followers.Kapofi and other aspirants must subject themselves to the constitution of the party and perhaps push, from within, for amendments that would cater for genuine members of the party to participate in the future.If not, Swapo will continue to be a conveyor belt of leaders whose only narrative is old war stories and how everyone must polish their shoes in appreciation of their supposed heroics, with no clue how to move the nation forward.
