EDITORIAL: Our greatest national resource is not beneath the ground

Namibia has become accustomed to speaking the language of discovery. Every few months there is another announcement about oil prospects, another mining investment, another billion-dollar project or another promise that the next economic breakthrough is just around the corner.There is nothing wrong with optimism. But there is a danger in believing that prosperity will simply be drilled, dug or pumped out of the ground.The countries that have achieved lasting prosperity did not do so merely because they possessed valuable natural resources. Many resource-rich nations remain trapped in cycles of inequality, corruption and slow development. Their mistake was believing that wealth in the ground automatically translates into wealth in people's lives.Natural resources can create opportunities. They cannot replace good governance.Namibia stands at a defining moment in its history. Green hydrogen, offshore oil exploration, critical minerals and expanding uranium production have attracted unprecedented international attention. The world suddenly sees Namibia as a country of immense economic promise.The question is whether Namibians will ultimately see the same benefits.That answer depends less on the price of uranium or the size of an oil discovery than on the quality of our institutions. Investors can build projects, but they cannot build public trust. Governments can negotiate contracts, but they cannot legislate integrity. Citizens can demand accountability, but only if transparency remains non-negotiable.This is why debates about procurement, public finances, environmental oversight and regulatory certainty are not distractions from development. They are development.Every dollar lost to waste is a classroom not built. Every delayed permit without justification sends the wrong signal to investors. Every public institution that fails to explain its decisions chips away at confidence. Every scandal that goes unanswered reinforces the perception that accountability is optional.Economic growth and institutional strength are inseparable.
