Young Warriors drawn against Botswana
The Young Warriors have been pitted against Botswana in the first round of the 2019 Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The qualifiers start at the end of March for the top youth football competition for under- 20 teams on the continent.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted the draw over the weekend and Namibia will face neighbours Botswana in the first round, with the first leg in Gaborone between 30 March and 1 April and the second leg in Windhoek slated for between 20 and 22 April. The winner of the tie will proceed to the second round to face Congo in May, with the winner of that meeting advancing to the third and final round of qualifiers, where Senegal or Egypt waits in July. In the previous qualifiers for Zambia 2017, the Young Warriors lost 2-0 on aggregate to South Africa, after a goalless draw in Windhoek and a 2-0 loss in Johannesburg in the second round.
They defeated Swaziland 4-2 in the first round. In the 2019 qualifiers, 12 countries are exempted from competing in the first round. They are Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, South Africa and Zambia. This is by virtue of their qualification for the finals of the last two editions of the tournament.
The 2019 finals will be hosted by Niger, with the four semi-finalists qualifying for the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup.
The world cup hosts will be announced next month.
