World TB Day is commemorated on 24 March each year to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis (TB) and to fight the global TB epidemic. World TB Day provides the opportunity to shine the spotlight on the disease and mobilize political and social commitment to accelerate the progress to end TB.
Under the theme “Wanted leaders for a TB free Namibia.” The ministry of health and social service commemorated World TB Day at the Katutura Youth Complex sport stadium last week.
Carah Husselmann, a former TB patient, shared her journey as a TB patient and the challenges she went through.
She urged people to take their medication diligently if they want to be cured from TB. “The journey was bumpy but I managed to cross the finish line. I took the treatment and beat TB,” she said.
Minister of health and social services, Dr Benard Haufiku emphasised that increased attention and focus need to be paid to address the spread of TB. “It is important that all those people who have TB start treatment as soon as possible,” he said.
He further said that community leaders need to provide leadership in the fight against TB in our country. “Take the lead everywhere,” he said.
