This past week has once again been plagued by horrific reports of rapes, gender-based violence and assaults.
On Sunday, two suspects wearing balaclavas cut open a tent in Kuisebmond where a 32-year-old woman and her baby were asleep.
The suspects tied the woman’s hands feet, put sand in her mouth and put the baby in a plastic bag before fleeing the crime scene.
One of the neighbours woke up when she heard the child crying and went to investigate. She then alerted the other neighbours, and they called the police.
The woman was taken to hospital, where she is in a stable condition. The baby boy is in good health. It is not yet clear whether the suspects took something from the tent. The motive for the crime is still unknown.
Gender-based violence
In another incident, a 24-year-old pregnant woman was seriously assaulted by her 22-year-old boyfriend at Mavanze village in Kavango West last Monday. As a result, she lost the baby. The suspect has not been arrested yet.
Multiple rapes
A 15-year-old girl was raped by five men from June last year to October this year at Omeege Omusimboti and Oshinyadhila village in the Ongwediva area.
According to the police, the suspects asked the girl to clean their houses and then raped her. The girl was treated and her condition is stable. The suspects have not been arrested yet.
It was also reported this weekend that a 52-year-old man raped a 17-year-old girl on 31 July at Farm Amper-Bo near Gibeon. The girl is now reported to be pregnant.
In another case, a 17-year-old girl was raped by a 26-year-old man between Otjingwindi village and Ozongaka village on Wednesday.
The suspect broke into her house, dragged her into the bush at knifepoint and raped her. The girl’s grandmother told the neighbours about the crime and they called the police. The suspect was arrested.
At Oshakati, a 19-year-old girl was gang-raped on Saturday by her boyfriend’s two cousins and another man.
It is alleged that the girl was asleep in her boyfriend's room when the suspects entered the room one by one. They allegedly suffocated the victim with a pillow, strangled her and raped her. All three suspects were arrested.
In another rape case, a man whose age is unknown raped a 13-year-old girl at Rundu on Sunday. He apparently threatened her with a knife. The suspect was recently released from police custody and has not been re-arrested yet.
At Arandis, a 37-year-old woman was dragged out of her house by a 40-year-old man and raped on Thursday.
He apparently took her to his house where he raped her. The suspect has been arrested.
At Kalkrand, a 22-year-old woman was raped by a 39-year-old man on Saturday after he threatened her with a knife.
It is alleged that the man followed the woman to a certain house, took out the knife and forced her to go to his shack, where he raped her. The suspect has been arrested.
At Omatelekelo village in the Omusati Region, a 22-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her 33-year-old boyfriend on Friday.
