Local sports journalist Maurice Kambukwe, from New Era, will accompany the winners of the Copa Coca-Cola under-15 football tournament, Ongwediva Junior Secondary School, to Nairobi, Kenya, it was announced yesterday.

Kambukwe is the overall winner of the first-ever Copa Coca-Cola media awards, earning himself a ticket to cover the Copa Coca-Cola Africa Cup of Nations football tournament from 30 November to 6 December.

This is a great opportunity for the young journalist, as he will attend various media workshops and also network with journalists from other countries.

He won the overall prize ahead of fellow sports journalist John Tuerijama (first runner-up), Limba Mupetami (Namibian Sun and second runner-up), NBC's Kavee Kamberipa (winner for electronic media) and Aili Ailongo from Informanté (winner for digital media).

All of them covered the tournament intensively, but Kambukwe earned the most votes.

Coca-Coca brand manager Terrisha Naidoo said the journalists had assisted in identifying, nurturing and rewarding young footballing talent.

“Your efforts have the power to change the world, to inspire and unite people, to ensure a sustainable future for many people. You were able to tell the story of raw football talent, the milestones of the tournament, achievements and how it keeps young boys out of mischief, and hold authorities accountable for their actions,” Naidoo said.
