What are your thoughts on the new school calendar?
The ministry of education announced a new calendar change of two semesters instead of the usual three terms last month. The Zone spoke to some learners of Gabriel Taapopi Secondary School in Ongwediva to find out their take.
Farai Mashonganyika
The Covid-19 pandemic caused a lot of problems in the education system. The virus can easily spread rapidly as learners under the age of 18 cannot be vaccinated. With the new semesters, learners will not spend that much time on holiday which help curb the spread.
Asser Mamai
During the winter term, lockdowns really affected the learners’ mode of study. They were always in and out of school. So, the two semesters will be a good idea. However, the time should just be changed as usual to allow learners to work from their houses to school as it can get quite dark.

I do not think it is a good idea, because two terms do not leave room for improvement. It is also super hard for us as learners to keep track of one’s academic performance, because we only have two opportunities to perform really well.

During this time of Covid, the learning process was hindered by so many factors such as so many terms and unnecessary holidays. Two semesters will help educators to cover much content as required the syllabus, but it might not be effective as the holidays are shorter.

The short winter holiday will allow the syllabuses to be completed. The curriculums are long and learners will be in a state of relaxation and learners will become comfortable and they might not do well at the end of the year.
