Unam proud of World Cup-bound players
The University of Namibia (Unam) Rugby Club has proven that it is an important team as some of its players are going to represent Namibia at the World Cup.
The University of Namibia (Unam) Rugby Club has expressed pride that seven of its players were included in the 31-man senior national rugby team that will compete in the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.
The seven players are Obert Nortje, Lesley Klim, Prince !Gaoseb, Desiderius Sethie, Helarius Kisting, Chad Plato and Max Katjijeko.
Speaking at a mini send-off event for the players, dean of students Margareth Mainga paid tribute to the players and technical team of Unam, saying their hard work has finally paid off.
“We are proud of the seven players who will represent Namibia first, secondly Unam's 12 campuses and thirdly, themselves and their families. Know that whatever you do, you have a lot of dreams and aspirations, and this is just the start. Your success lies in the discipline instilled by the coaches at this institution,” she said.
Mainga advised the players to always focus on the teachings of the coaches so as to continue reaching for their dreams and also called on them to manoeuvre around the many obstacles that they will face in Japan in their quest for success.
Meanwhile Johan Diergaardt, the head coach of Unam, said the investment by the university is paying off as evidenced by the seven players who were selected.
“This could be an example to other, similar institutions who would want to produce sporting heroes for our country. In 2023, we would like to have more players in the team,” he said.
Diergaardt however also said he was at the same time sad as two of their players, Mahepisa Tjeriko and Oderich Mouton, are missing out on the World Cup due to injury.
He also said the experienced gained by the players in Japan will come in handy as the players will come and plough back in the youth.
This is the first time Unam will have players in the rugby national team.
