Training through the festive season

The Namibian national football team staff and players will have to soldier on through the festive season, given their African Nations Championship (Chan) mission.
December is usually the time most Namibians spend time with their families travelling the country, but the Brave Warriors team are faced with an assignment in Cameroon in January 2021.
This means interim coach Bobby Samaria and his charges will have to remain at camp during the 'big days' to avoid contracting the coronavirus before the competition.
Sacrifice for the jersey
Samaria said it is too early to say with absolute certainty, but is adamant that the team will be in camp over Christmas and New Year's Eve.
“This is unfortunately what was bound to happen and the players and staff will have to sacrifice their time in order to be prepared for the Chan competition.
“The fact that there is no league football and there is no sign of any yet means that the players will have to spend more time in camp,” he said.
Virtual connection
The coach, however, said the players can always connect virtually with their families, especially during those important days on the calendar.
“I am sure that with technology, we will be able to share some time with our families through social media channels.
“They will also have to understand the sacrifice these players and staff are making for the benefit of the team and nation,” the interim coach said.
Full fitness aim
The team is already pressed for time given that they have to regain full fitness after several months of inaction due to the coronavirus state of emergency and its related restrictions. However, the players will have the opportunity to test their fitness levels when they play a friendly match against neighbouring South Africa next month.
Samaria also has enough time to ensure that the boys are totally ready for the competition, with the 2020 Confederations of Southern Africa Football tournament lined up for November.
Namibia are in Group D with Guinea, Tanzania and Zambia.
A match programme will be communicated in due course, the Confederation of African Football said.
