The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) yesterday announced that Swapo Party’s candidate, Kennedy Simasiku, is the duly-elected councillor for the Katima Mulilo Urban Constituency following Wednesday’s by-election.

Simasiku takes over from fellow party member John Muchila Mukaya, who died in a car accident in May.

According to the ECN, Simasiku scooped 1 557 of the 3 002 votes counted.

Simasiku stood against Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) candidate Marklee Mweti Matengu, Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) candidate Malipa Lynnette, National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate Chripher Simasiku and two independent candidates, Kubwima Poniso Miller and Nkando Gibson Kabuna.

Matengu garnered 294 votes, Lynette 296 votes, NDP’s Simasiku 282, Miller 156 and Nkando 417 votes.

Prior to the election ECN had announced that 14 241 eligible voters were expected to cast their votes but only 3 002 votes were counted, of which six were declared spoilt.
