Swapo elder’s council secretary Mukwaita Shanyengana demands that members of Parliament must respect the wishes of their voters and not entertain talks about decriminalising sodomy.

In a statement yesterday, he said homosexuality is “highly unacceptable” and a “bad culture” imposed upon the Namibian nation.

“We understand that some people are demanding law that would be made to protect the homosexuals and gays and lesbians. In Namibia, by law, homosexuality is illegal. God had created Adam and Eve only. Man and woman only,” he said.

He added that as elders of the Namibian society, they will not accept that the future of young people be destroyed with homosexuality.

“People of Namibia shed their precious blood to liberate this country. There are priority things and projects in the Swapo manifesto that need to be implemented by Swapo government like youth employment and the development of the country in various sectors in order to improve the living standards of our people,” he said.

‘Satanic and demonic’

Justice minister Yvonne Dausab recently announced that government is looking into scrapping the outdated apartheid sodomy law which criminalised sex between men.

She also said the discriminatory law which forms part of a list of outdated legislation is hardly enforced in Namibia, which makes it redundant.

However, right-wing sections of Namibian society have widely criticised this move and said it is enjoying priority over what they believe are more bread and butter issues.

Some of the fiercest resistance came from the ruling party, with its youth league calling homosexuality “satanic” and “demonic”.
