Stolen baby recovered at Ohangwena
On the eve of Day of the African Child tomorrow, a 20-month old baby who was stolen at Oshakati on Wednesday has been recovered by the police at Onhuno in the Ohangwena Region.
A 23-year-old woman will now face a charge of kidnapping after Ohangwena police recovered the child yesterday. The suspect was employed as a nanny last month by the baby's mother, Ndapewa Netope, a resident of Evululuko in Oshakati.
Netope told Namibian Sun yesterday when she arrived home from work on Wednesday evening, she could not find the nanny, as well her child.
After several attempts to get hold of the nanny via her cellphone, she later sent Netope an SMS saying she was at Onhuno, before switching off her cellphone again.
According to Netope, she hired the woman from Okelemba village in Ohangwena last month.
“On Wednesday I went to work at around 11:00 in the morning and I left her and the baby at home. When I returned home at around 19:00 in the evening I found the house locked and when I knocked there was nobody.
I called her on her cellphone but she was not answering. Later she sent me a SMS that she was at Onhuno and later the cellphone went off,” Netope said. Oshana police spokesperson, Inspector Petrus Iimbili, said the baby was recovered at Onhuno by the Ohangwena police.
“Were are not sure yet where the child was found, but we are confirming that it is the baby that was alleged to have been stolen from Oshakati.
We are now waiting for the mother to come and get the infant and then she can open a case. The suspect is currently held by the police,” Iimbili added.
