When and why did you become a teacher?
In 2013. I knew that I wanted to make a change in the lives of people, especially young people. Children play such a big role in the development of this country, so it is our mandate as teachers to groom them.
What is the best part about being a teacher?
I would say the best part of this job is being able to work with different personalities daily. There's so much to learn from my learners so there is never a dull moment.
Can you tell us your journey towards becoming a teacher?
When I finished grade 12, I started studying the following year. I enrolled for a bachelor's degree in education (honours) majoring in Afrikaans and English. Due to financial difficulties, I started working to help support my family and now I am doing exactly what I've always wanted to do.
What has been the highlight in your career so far?
Contributing to the life of the Namibian Child. There are people whom I taught who are studying education, law and nursing just to mention a few, and that has been the greatest milestone in my career so far.
What are some of your hobbies or things you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love reading. I spend a lot of time in my garden. To me, that's my happy place and the place where I find the most peace.
What are some of the changes you've brought to the school where you're currently working?
At the school where I teach, children are struggling with low self-esteem issues. I have personally contributed to change by motivating and inspiring these learners to believe in themselves and these changes I notice in my class and when they interact with others.
What is your dream for the learners of your school?
My dream for the learners of PK De Villiers is firstly for them to be themselves unapologetically. Love who they are and be open to change. I'd also love for them to take this world by the horns. I wish for them just the best, they must always remember: "Character first".
