Skorpion in care and maintenance
Skorpion Zinc Mine and Refinery will be placed in care and maintenance during April, the company said in a statement this morning.
The move will affect about 1 500 employees.
The decision was taken to sort out problems with open pit failure.
Skorpion said it is talking with the Mineworkers’ Union of Namibia (MUN) in line with the Labour Act and on the “basis of existing agreements”.
Production ramp down will happen progressively during the month of April. This period overlaps with the country-wide lockdown to contain the spread of Covid-19, Skorpion said.
