Four Indian nationals who tested positive earlier this week for Covid-19, and are among Namibia's 90 cases, fall within the categories of people who are permitted to enter the Land of the Brave while the country's borders are closed, says health minister Kalumbi Shangula.
Three female Indian nationals aged 19, 30 and 46 entered Namibia on 17 June and were confirmed as positive coronavirus cases earlier this week.
The health minister also announced yesterday that another Indian national had tested positive for the virus.
“Case 89 is a 56-year-old male of Indian nationality who arrived in Namibia on 17 June and has been in quarantine in Windhoek. He was tested on 21 June. “He did not have Covid-19 related signs and symptoms. The results came out positive,” Shangula said yesterday morning.
During a later interview, he said the categories of people who are still allowed to enter Namibia include citizens returning home, those with permanent residence status, people who are domiciled in the country, people who are members of diplomatic missions and those providing essential services. Shangula, however, refused to specify which category the Indian nationals fall under.
Shangula was asked why foreign nationals were allowed to enter the country during the coronavirus state of emergency.
90 positive cases
Namibia recorded 14 more Covid-19 cases yesterday, bringing the official tally to 90, with zero deaths.
Eleven of the new cases are from Walvis Bay, one is from Swakopmund, while the other two are from quarantine facilities in Windhoek.
By yesterday morning, 7 925 samples had been tested.
