Xavier Cupido was born and raised in Windhoek and completed high school at Academia Secondary School. Immediately after school he started working at a local bank where he gained more than 17 years of banking experience.
He started as a forex teller and worked his way up the ranks to eventually become the bank’s anti-money-laundering compliance officer (AML).
“During my time at the bank I completed several banking-related courses, certificates and other leadership development courses,” he says.
Cupido is now the manager of operational compliance and forensics at Sanlam.
“I am responsible for creating general awareness of the importance of compliance and to improve the general compliance culture within the business by developing and ensuring that the internal controls are adhered to at all times. I am also responsible for mitigating the risk of non-compliance and fraud,” he says.
The competitive Cupido l is fairly new in this position as he joined Sanlam only two months ago.
“I am excited about this new journey and my future and the future of Sanlam. I am happy to be part of the Sanlam family and I look forward to doing my part to contribute to the business.”
He says there is never a dull moment in the compliance and forensics space. “I find the position challenging and exciting at the same time, it motivates me to always do better,” he adds.
Cupido defines success in this position as achieving a strong and competent compliance culture within the business where compliance and fraud checks are seamlessly built into and entrenched in the daily operations without causing any frustrations to staff and clients.
“I think the measurement of success would also be complying with legal obligations while delivering top-class service for our clients,” he adds.
The advice he would give to young people is to believe in themselves and in what they do, no matter what adversities they might face in life.
