Otjozondjupa aim to reclaim newspaper cup
The annual youth football tournament will be held at Mariental in the Hardap Region this coming long weekend.
The Otjozondjupa regional under-20 team is training hard at Otjiwarongo with the purpose to claim their fourth title at the popular The Namibian Newspaper Cup tournament.
The team's head coach, Robba Gurirab, told Nampa that his players were ready for the tourney.
Gurirab said their training camp was largely aimed at instilling discipline in the boys and teaching them how to approach different games and situations on the pitch.
The Otjozondjupa team have won the annual newspaper tournament three times: in 2005 when they defeated hosts Hardap, and in 2013 and 2017 by beating the Omaheke and Erongo regions.
“We are going to Mariental with the aim of bringing the trophy back home for the fourth time,” said Gurirab.
The coach is boastful of his midfielder and the strikers who apparently do not tire, play as a unit and have “massive speed and accuracy”.
Gurirab also thanked Otjozondjupa governor Otto Ipinge for the financial and material support to the team.
Ipinge on Thursday promised to attend the tournament from beginning to end.
Otjozondjupa are placed in Group C with old rivals Erongo and Ohangwena.
