The Otjiwarongo Social Cup for 2021 was officially launched this week by Otjozondjupa regional council chairperson, Marlene Mbakera.
In her official remarks, she said the tournament is organised by community members who want to empower, develop, identify and groom talented young people in the region.
She said sports such as netball, soccer, four-by-four relay athletics, tug of war and boxing as well as music will form part of the tournament which takes place from 3 to 5 December at the Mokati Sports Stadium and Swanevelder Community Hall at the town.
Participants are also community members, church organisations and corporate companies who are expected to organise their own teams and register them with the executive committees.
“The purpose is to identify talent among our young people and to encourage them to enter the national sporting arena. As constituency councillor for Otjiwarongo, I promise to bring out my netball team from Ombili that will be fit enough to compete in this tournament,” Mbakera said.
50 boxers set to compete
On his part, Otjozondjupa interim executive boxing chairman Timothy Haikonda said approximately 50 boxers aged 14 and above are expected to participate.
He said young boxers from Khomas, Kunene, Kavango East and Kavango West as well as those from Oshikoto and Zambezi have been invited to join the tournament.
Teams will register for between N$200 and N$750 to participate, the chairperson of the Otjiwarongo Social Cup, Ernst Muraranganda, added.
He further said N$50 will be the gate fee for adults, while children will pay N$10.
“Food will be sold inside the sports stadium, and those who are interested to sell their prepared food and drinks can talk to us,” Muraranganda said.
