Otjiwarongo murder suspects denied bail

Five men who allegedly beat a street vendor to death have been denied bail by the Otjiwarongo Magistrate's Court.
Zimbabwean national Hlaisanani Zhou (43) died last Wednesday shortly after he was severely assaulted, apparently after being accused of stealing wood glue.
The accused in the matter are 23-year-old Jandre Jansen van Vuuren, Jonathan Myburgh (22), Roberto Katjinamunene (29), Kefas Kuutondokwa (26) and the 20-year-old Hendrik Simupureni. It is alleged that they attacked Hlaisanani Zhou at Etemba Plaza. They appeared before Otjiwarongo magistrate Karel Muyeghu. Van Vuuren and Myburgh said they will appoint a private lawyer, while Katjinamunene, Kuutondokwa and Simupureni said they will approach the Legal Aid directorate for a State-appointed lawyer.
State opposed to bail
Prosecutor Elana Doeses strongly opposed bail. “These accused face a serious case of murder and it would not be in the public interest and administration of justice if any of them are released on bail,” she said. Doeses also told the court that police investigations into the matter are at an early stage. The case was postponed to 17 August for further investigations and to allow the accused to acquire legal representation. They were advised to launch formal bail applications and are in custody in the Otjiwarongo police holding cells.
