Otjinene to host first-ever annual charity cup
The village of Otjinene in the Omaheke Region will be a hive of activity when the first-ever annual Otjinene Charity Cup takes place there next month.
The four-day football and netball tournament is sponsored by local businessman Stephanus Martin to the tune of N$50 000 and will be held from 14 to 17 April.
Also planned are the Miss Otjinene beauty pageant and a music bash on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Martin told Nampa on Wednesday the tournament will be the first of its kind for the village and is aimed at promoting football and boosting the local economy.
“We aim to boost Otjinene's economy and through this allow small businesses to market themselves,” he said, adding that they hope it also helps with the development of sports.
Martin said he hopes this annual gathering grows in leaps and bounds, provided it enjoys much-needed cooperation from private businesses in and around Otjinene.
“We need to invest in sports for our young people to stay focused and help them reach the top levels of sports in Namibia and abroad,” he said. The winning team in the netball category will walk away with N$5 000 a trophy and gold medals, with the two finalists playing in sponsored netball kits.
The loser will get N$3 000 and silver medals and the two semi-final losers will get N$1 000 for their efforts. In the football category the four semi-finalists will receive full kits to play in in the semi-final and final matches.
The winner walks away with N$20 000 and gold medals and the loser N$10 000 and silver medals, while both semi-final losers get N$5 000 each.
The entry fee for both netball and football is N$2 000 per team.
The tournament is open to all first, second division and non-league teams, with each team allowed to use three Premier League players.
The winning teams in both the netball and football categories will be allowed to enter the competition for free in the 2018 edition.
The due date for entries is 12 April, with the draw to take place the same day.
