Ongwediva to improve social welfare
The Ongwediva town council on Friday launched its Mayoral Fund, which is aimed at promoting social welfare by assisting vulnerable members of the local community.
“Over the years the town has occasionally experienced incidents of fire which led to loss of property.
“These incidents leave families destitute and without basic necessities.
“There are families that are poverty stricken where the council could lend a helping hand at a small scale,” steering committee member Iyaloo Dawid said at the event.
“The mayoral fund has been identified as an alternative to relief communities by way of providing assistance when necessary. The aim is to improve the living conditions of the needy Ongwediva residents by way of expressing compassion during unforeseen desperate situations as a responsible public entity,” he said.
The fund will be managed by a nine-member steering committee chaired by the mayor. This committee will consider applications for assistance.
Community members of Ongwediva and non-profit organisations that promote the social welfare of residents are eligible to benefit from this fund.
The town council will organise fundraising initiatives for the fund.
The council will also introduce a social responsibility levy and make budgetary provision for the fund.
The launch was attended by local residents, the business community and government officials.
