Ompundja road impassable

The Oshakati-Ompundja road in Oshana Region has been washed away, making it impassable.
The road is used by teachers and pupils of Oshipumbu Combined School and Nevonga Primary School. Last week some teachers, learners and parents of Oshipumbu Combined School tried to build a temporary access road, but to no avail. The villagers are begging for an emergency response before the pupils return to school next week. The gravel road was completely washed away by a previous flood and the recent rain has worsened its condition.b Ompundja constituency councillor Adolf Hitler Uunona told Namibian Sun on Thursday that the regional government was working on the problem but funding was a problem. Uunona said they managed to secure N$140 000 but that is not enough. He said contractors refused to work on the road because of the small amount being offered. Uunona said they were in talks with the Oshana regional council to have the road fixed as soon as possible but government bureaucracy would cause further delay because the project must be put out on tende. “It has to undergo the tender process. As we speak, it is being discussed with the evaluation committee, then it will go to procurement committee. We also discussed the issue with Roads Authority to proclaim the road so that it can be renovated by the [central] government as that would solve the affordability problem,” he said.
Uunona said it was unclear when the road works would start.
