Omaruru to host Olympic Day celebrations
Omaruru in the Erongo Region, in collaboration with the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC), will celebrate the fifth annual Olympic Day on Saturday.
The celebrations mark the commemoration of the Olympic Movement.
Communities from more than 204 nations across the world join in the day to engage in sport, educational and cultural events.
This year, 1 000 athletes in the Erongo Region are expected to gather at Omaruru to celebrate a mini-Olympic Games that will consist of football, netball, boxing, tennis, athletics, karate, basketball and volleyball.
Omaruru sports officer Berthold Karumendu said Saturday's event differs from previous Olympic Day celebrations.
“We are going to have senior teams competing in football and netball this year, and as for the primary schools, we will have a seven-a-side competition at Luna Park.”
More teams had been invited compared to previous years and as usual the day will be concluded by the Olympic Day Boxing Bonanza in the evening at the Ozondje Community Hall.
Karumendu said the organisers wish to engage athletes in activities that will allow the local community an opportunity to learn as well as discover together the meaning of sport and its values.
The one-day event will see close to 12 senior football as well as netball teams from all the different towns in Erongo compete amongst each other for the first time in Omaruru.
Karumendu the local municipality will help with cleaning up the sporting venues, apart from having granted their permission for the event.
