The senior MTC men's and women's field hockey teams were officially sent off by their sponsor MTC yesterday.

The teams will participate in the eleventh (men) and eighth (women) Africa Nations Cup (Afcon) which will take place from 17 to 23 January at Theodosia Okoh Stadium in Accra, Ghana.

Namibia and Ghana will face off against Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa to determine Africa's field hockey champions.

The South African men's and women's teams are the defending African champions.

Reagon Graig, president of the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU), said: “Hockey is the sport with the third most fans in the world. Many thanks to MTC who saw the opportunity to sponsor both teams for several years.

“Thank you very much MTC and Mr John Ekongo for your confidence in the NHU and the players.

"We do not underestimate the contribution that MTC and the media have made recently. We are grateful for your support. Thank you very much.”

John Ekongo of MTC (main sponsor) said: "I have been with MTC for almost eleven years now and every time I get involved with a national team, I see men and women who are proud and focused on the task ahead. I can see it in your eyes.”
