NUNW bays for Jooste’s blood
STAFF REPORTER
WINDHOEK
Secretary-general of the National Union of Namibia Workers (NUNW) Job Muniaro has called for the removal of public enterprises minister Leon Jooste over the looming liquidation of Air Namibia.
Many view Jooste as a ‘fall guy’ and sacrificial lamb for a liquidation that was first publicly stated by President Hage Geingob during his 2020 State of the Nation Address, and which the minister was tasked, alongside his finance counterpart Ipumbu Shiimi, to spearhead.
NUNW plans to lead protests tomorrow against the move, just a day before Air Namibia is due to pay N$107 million to Belgian company Challenge Air as part of a settlement agreement reached by the two parties and made an order of the High Court a fortnight ago.
Muniaro accused Jooste of ‘misleading’ Cabinet and Geingob about the airline’s situation.
Last week, government said the decision to liquidate Air Namibia was collective, not individual.
‘Jooste must fall’
“Jooste must fall,” Muniaro said yesterday on Namibian Sun’s flagship talk show, The Evening Review.
“He is putting our country under the hammer without consultations with key stakeholders such as the workers. You don’t just show up at the office and tell employees they no longer have jobs. These are people’s lives we are talking about,” he said.
Jooste did not respond when approached for comment.
