New school in Grootfontein
Ester Kamati – Karstveld Academy is a new school currently under construction in Grootfontein, hoping to welcome learners from across the country in January 2021.
The academy was built as a contribution to the future and growth of Grootfontein by a family who has been part of the community for over 80 years. Through the establishment of Karstveld Academy, their vision for the environment in which they grew up is embodied.
From early childhood development until grade 12, following the Namibian school curriculum, the school hopes to attract learners from beyond the borders of the northern town with a capacity exceeding 600 learners.
Infrastructure
Karstveld Academy will have a pre-primary school section, complete with three classrooms, its own office and reception as well as eight primary school classrooms. Eleven secondary school classrooms will be available along with fully equipped biology and physics laboratories for practice.
Along with that, learners will have access to a media centre and separate arts and music centres for primary and secondary school.
The school will have hostel accommodation with the capacity to house 128 learners, including flats for supervisors as well as separate boarding for grade one learners, who will have their own resident supervision and laundry.
Standard sports facilities are also being constructed at the school and will include two rugby fields, one of which will also be fit for soccer. A hockey field, cricket pitch as well as netball and tennis courts will be available along with a swimming pool and pavilion. The construction of a school hall will begin in 2021.

While appreciating that conducive learning needs a conducive environment, the new school aims to be a school of excellence with a mission to provide a platform for learners to reach their full potential, the school said.
The aim is to provide quality education in a professional setting and facilitate learning with a balance of cultural and sport activities. The school's values are 'Scienta Labor Libertas', which means Knowledge, Work and Freedom.
“Through knowledge and hard work, we want to provide our learners the freedom to be the best that they can be and to follow their dreams.
“We want to give our learners the opportunity to identify their talents and empower them to reach their full potential to the benefit of society as a whole,” said Herman Stroh, a member of the steering committee developed to assist in the establishment of the school.
