The national women's hockey team found the going tough in their second match at the Africa Cup of Nations Outdoor Hockey Cup as they were beaten by South Africa at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra.
The Namibians started their campaign with a 3-0 win against Uganda on Monday, but faltered against much stronger South Africa.
The defending champions South Africa are the first women's team through to the semi-finals.
Melissa Gillies, coach of Namibia, said South Africa are such a well-drilled team. “It felt like we were just defending the whole 60 minutes. We have a very young team and our performance was a bit of mixed bag but this match was very good experience and we are looking forward."
On the other hand, the men’s side were also put to the sword by Kenya as they faltered (4-1). In their opening match they also lost 13-0 to a more organised South African team.
The captain of the side Tarrant Butcher said they played better in the final quarter when the scores were tied and the result was up for grabs.
“Unfortunately, we allowed them to score, while we did not convert our opportunities. But we are Namibians and we will stay in the fight for each of our remaining matches."
The women’s side will face Zimbabwe today at 13:00, whereas the men’s opponents were unconfirmed before our print deadline.
They both stand in a strong position to book a semi-final spot if they beat their opponents.
