The national senior women’s hockey team opened their 2022 Hockey Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 3-0 win against Uganda at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra, Ghana, yesterday.
This is the eighth edition of the women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the 11th men’s championship.
Namibia is represented by two teams at the event from 17 to 23 January.
Namibia’s goals came from youngsters Sascha Brinkmann and Anthea Coetzee.
“It’s a dream come true to score a goal at this tournament. It was my goal and to achieve it is indescribable. Playing South Africa today will be tough but I hope we can work together as a team,” said Brinkmann
Coetzee said it was an amazing match. “It was our first match, and we scored our first goal and secured our first caps,” she said.
The first quarter of the match was tough for Namibia, with the first goal of the match only coming in the third quarter through Coetzee.
Brinkmann scored the second goal, giving Namibia the lead.
In the fourth and final quarter, Taramarie Myburgh scored for Namibia.
Namibia’s coach, Melisa Gillies, said she was happy with the players’ performance even though they did not have enough time to study Uganda’s way of play. She added that today’s match against South Africa will be a tough one.
