Namibia condemns Trump
The recognition by the US administration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel undermines prospects for a viable two-state solution to the dispute, the Namibian government has said.
US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital was yesterday criticised by the Namibian government amid fears of a universal diplomatic backlash.
Namibia, in a strongly-worded statement, reaffirmed Jerusalem as capital of both Palestine and Israel.
A defiant Trump on Wednesday announced that the US formally recognises Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, breaking with long-time US policy. As a result, the US leader has ordered the state department to begin the process of moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The decision by Trump has been met with mixed reactions, with many countries, including Namibia, fearing that the gesture would create further unrest in the Middle East.
“Namibia strongly condemns and denounces the decision by the Trump administration as this is a big step backwards on the two-state solution which is the only viable option in the pursuit of peace between Palestine, Israel and the entire region,” the statement reads.
“The recognition by the US administration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel undermines the prospects of a viable two-state solution and can ignite renewed conflict that has ravaged the Palestinian and Israeli peoples since 1948 when the state of Israel was created.
“The decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and the expansion of illegal Jewish settlements on the Palestinian occupied territories put in serious jeopardy the two-state solution.”
The statement issued by the ministry of international relations further called on the international community to champion the cause of the Palestinian people through the implementation of the relevant UN resolutions.
“Namibia further reaffirms its resolute support for the legitimate struggle of the Palestinian people against Israeli occupation and the expansion of illegal Jewish settlements. Namibia reaffirms its support for the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and independence with East Jerusalem as their capital.”
Israel's government regards Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the country, while the Palestinians also feel equally strongly that East Jerusalem must be the capital of their state.
