WINDHOEK

A 26-year-old domestic worker who was arrested for allegedly killing and mutilating her newborn baby has been sent for mental observation.

Yoolokeni Haipinge made her first appearance in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court in Windhoek yesterday.

She has been charged with abortion, murder, defeating the course of justice and violating a dead body.

According to State prosecutor Victoria Likius, the case has been postponed to 14 January 2022 for further investigation, the completion of a mental observation report and for legal aid.

No bail has been granted and Haipinge will remain in custody. Magistrate Olivia van der Colff presided over the matter.

Gruesome

Haipinge was arrested on Monday.

It is alleged that she gave birth in a bathtub in the house where she is employed as a domestic worker. She then reportedly wrapped the baby in plastic bags and hid the body in a closet in her bedroom, police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said.

“After some time, she allegedly removed the plastic bags, cut the baby’s body open, removed the intestines and threw them in the dustbin.”

According to Shikwambi, the owner of the house on Monday detected an unpleasant smell around the house.

Upon searching the domestic worker’s room, the plastic bags containing the baby’s dead body was found in a decomposed state, with a slit-open stomach. The intestines were found in the dustbin by the police who responded to the call.

Shikwambi said these types of incidents shatter their efforts against gender-based violence, making them meaningless. "Everyone deserves to live free from violence. When will it stop?”
