Mobile Telecommunications Limited Mobile (MTC), Namibia’s leading telecommunications provider, has long been doing more than just ‘Making the Connection’.

Through massive capital investments in skills and infrastructure, they’ve played a central role in making telecommunications accessible to all Namibia’s inhabitants. They’ve also spent millions sponsoring sports, and have played an indispensible role in bringing world-class entertainment to the local scene.

In addition to these major initiatives, they’ve also changed thousands of lives through their various campaigns and competitions over the years.

In the past decade alone, they’ve ploughed an estimated N$45 million back into local communities, made many dreams come true.

On Friday, they handed over the keys to 19 brand new 2.4 Toyota Hilux bakkies to an elated group of winners from across the country. The winners ranged from an Okahandja high school pupil to a Catholic nun from Rundu and many more.

Recharge and Win

In a spectacular handover ceremony in Windhoek, MTC handed over the car keys to the winners of its Recharge & Win competition for August.

The winners span all age groups and come from a variety of backgrounds, who mostly just went about their regular airtime recharge routine before receiving what some said was one of their most exhilarating telephone calls ever.

Others however, did everything possible to get into the running.

Aged 17, Caroline Kakuaa from Okahandja is the youngest winner of the competition and proudly boasted that she’s just completed her first week of studying for her learner’s licence.

What makes her story stand out is not only her age, but the way she went about entering the competition. By her own admission, she took the N$500 her mother had given to her to take the family dog to the vet and thought to herself, why not buy recharge vouchers with the money, win the bakkie and then take the dog to the vet with her new wheels.

While her mother was not impressed at the time, that soon changed when they arrived at the handover and the reality set in.

“I am still in shock and in a state of disbelief. This came when I least expected it and I am grateful to MTC,” enthused Kakuua.

The oldest winner is 70-year-old Christina Mazila from Bukalo village in the Zambezi Region, who could not believe her luck when she was called with the good news.

“I am still shocked, it is the first time something this life changing has happened to me in all my 70 years on this earth. Thank you MTC,” she said.

MTC’s chief human capital and corporate affairs officer, Tim Ekandjo, said during the ceremony: “MTC is more than just a mobile operator, it is an iconic institution that fulfils dreams of Namibians; it is an integral part of the hard-woven fibre of Namibia and will continue doing so for the next 24 years – building on the long and rich history of being leaders in Namibia and pioneering most ICT advancements in the country, but also an institution that values and appreciate its customers.

“Congratulations to all of the winners and for being part of the 081 Nation.”

Here are the names of all the winners;
