The Namibian senior men’s team was defeated 13-0 by South Africa in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations Outdoor Hockey Cup on Monday evening in Accra, Ghana.
The players put on a great display but the South Africans were fitter and more eager to find the net.
In a post-match interview, the captain of the Namibian side, Tarrant Butcher, said the match was tough.
“The match was tough, the boys played really well. We stuck to our game. The first two quarters were great for the players; the last quarters were tough - the legs ran out a bit. Well done to South Africa for bringing up their level of play
“The next match is against Kenya. It will be a great match, the boys are keen, atmosphere in camp is full of excitement. Everyone’s attention is on that game. A win against Kenya means we go through to the semi-finals,” he added.
Before going to print, the Namibian senior women’s side was scheduled to face South Africa in their second match. They won their first match 3-0 against Uganda on Monday. The results of this match are available online (Namibian Sun and Sport Wrap Facebook pages).
