A 47-year-old mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped by her 39-year-old cousin at Onambeke B village in the Onyaanya area.
The Oshikoto police commander, Commissioner Armas Shivute, said the incident occurred just before midnight on Sunday.
Shivute said a case of rape was opened against Tobias Uushona and he appeared before the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
"It is alleged that the suspect entered the room of the victim, undressed her and raped her," he said.
Shivute noted that the suspect and the victim are cousins living in the same house.
The suspect has been remanded in custody.
Snakebite
In another incident, a five-year-old girl succumbed to snakebite as she could not be taken to the hospital on time.
Oshana police spokesperson Frieda Shikole said the girl died at home at Etope village in the Oshana region on Saturday evening.
Shikole said the girl, who was at home with her mother and her younger sister, was sent to fetch a nappy for the baby from a bedroom.
“Since the room was dark, the girl could not see the snake in the room, and she was bitten on her leg,” Shikole said.
It is alleged that there was no transport to take her to the hospital and the girl died at home moments later.
The snake was found and killed but the police did not reveal what type of snake it was.
